Where can I go in an Gyroplane?

Pretty much anywhere you want to - though you need to be extra careful if you are flying over large areas of woodland or water. The Montgomery Merlin was arguably the first UK produced machine to be flown from Scotland to Ireland, England and Wales. An Italian pilot recently made the trip from Italy to England and UK pilots have flown to France and Italy. Furthermore, in his attempt to fly around the world in 2004, Barry Jones flew from the UK to India! RAF 2000 Gyroplane

Gyroplanes in the UK are regulated as "home built" aircraft by the Popular Flying Association which issues them with an "Permit to Fly". This permit, in common with all other permit aircraft, places a number of restrictions on their operation :

  • They can only be flown during daylight hours
  • They cannot be flown in cloud or with in-flight visibility of less than 3 nautical miles.
  • They must always be flown in sight of the ground.
  • They cannot be flown over built up areas.
